Arc Flash Study & Electrical Safety Engineering

Arc flash events release intense heat, pressure and light in milliseconds, endangering people and plant. NOVTRIQ delivers arc flash studies that quantify incident energy across your electrical network, define safe working distances, and produce the labelling and PPE guidance operators need to work safely and stay compliant.

What we deliver

  • Incident Energy Study Report: calculated incident energy (cal/cm2) at each equipment location, arc flash boundaries and working distances using the IEEE 1584 method
  • Protective Device Coordination Review: relay and breaker settings assessed to reduce arc duration and incident energy at source
  • Arc Flash Warning Labels: equipment-specific labels stating incident energy, boundary, required PPE category and shock-protection data
  • PPE Category Schedule: task-based PPE assignments aligned to NFPA 70E, with an arc-rated clothing and equipment matrix
  • Electrical Safety Programme Support: safe systems of work, lock-off and permit guidance, and energised work risk assessment input
  • DSEAR / Hazardous Area Input: coordination of arc flash controls with explosive-atmosphere requirements where relevant

Who it is for

  • Facilities and maintenance managers responsible for switchrooms, LV and HV distribution
  • Manufacturing, data centre and process operators carrying out energised work
  • Health and safety leads seeking defensible compliance with electrical safety duties

Method and modelling

We build a validated single-line model of the installation and run short-circuit and protection studies using industry platforms such as ETAP and SKM. Incident energy is calculated to IEEE 1584, with arc flash boundaries derived for each node. Where protection settings drive high incident energy, we recommend coordination changes, maintenance switching or arc-reduction measures to lower risk at source.

Labelling, PPE and safe working

Study outputs translate into practical controls: durable equipment labels, a task-based PPE schedule, and safe systems of work aligned to NFPA 70E principles and UK electrical safety duties. We advise on de-energised working as the primary control, and on the assessment required before any energised task proceeds.

Integration with wider electrical safety

Arc flash rarely sits alone. We coordinate findings with short-circuit ratings, earthing and bonding, and DSEAR requirements in hazardous areas, so that a single, consistent electrical safety picture supports both compliance and day-to-day operations.
